One of our features in the new Mustang On Track is a dedicated project race car. Each month we will document the progress on our project.

Tell you what went well and what didn’t work out so well. We are hoping that you can learn something along the way.

At the very least we think you will get some entertainment from watching our fits and starts.

The first step is to introduce you to our car. In 2007 the world famous Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving had signed an agreement with General Motors to use Corvettes and Cadillacs as their primary school cars. This meant they would have to liquidate their special fleet of Mustangs.

Mustang On Track was lucky to acquire one of Bondurant’s better cars. A 1999 SVT Cobra advanced racing school car. These Cobra’s were specially prepared by Roush for track use. They are not street legal. They come with many staples of race car building.

A 22 gallon fuel cell replaced the stock tank and in the truck you will find a fire suppression system, the battery, and a meter to measure the number of hours on the car.

Below the truck is a unique three link suspension with a panhard bar. Included is a horsecollar mount on the third member of 360 degrees. Its definitely not something you would find in the aftermarket catalog.

In the cockpit is a special driver’s seat and a rollcage. The seat is not quite a race seat and the cage is not quite race legal, but they serve the purpose for the school. Also inside is a master cut off switch to kill power to the car and a switch to by pass the ABS brake system. There is also a four point harness and window nets on both sides of the car.

Since the Bondurant School is in Phoenix, AZ, the air conditioning unit it fully functional and the car is prepared with the idea that the A/C is going full blast all over the race track.

Up front is a Blue Oval built 4.6L 4 valve engine. Again this is not the stock unit. Forged pistons and H beam rods give the bottom end more strength to deal with the daily track use.

The shocks are special Monroe units calibrated for the track setup and matched with Eibach springs. The Brakes are Baer prepared PBR calipers.

Just as it rolled off the trailer at our Ponder Racing Services race shop, it could have been a very enjoyable HPDE/club track day car. But, we wanted more and we decided that we would build the car up from track school car to a Cobra racer that would qualify for NASA American Iron duty and SCCA South East Division ITO competition.

When we complete this process from school car to racing car we will have added a fully SCCA legal rollcage, a racing seat and harnesses, Moton Shocks, Brembo brakes, Toyo R888 tires and more.

If all goes well, We hope to have the car entered in the NASA National Championships in September, 2008 at Mid-Ohio. Its not guarantee, but it’s the goal.

For now, enjoy the photo gallery of the car and feel free to ask any questions. Contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
