The SCCA has made some long awaited changes to the rules governing their longtime popular pony car racing class, American Sedan. The new guidelines allow Mustangs in the Touring classes to run AS and thus allowing for the first time fuel injected engines in the class.
The class has required Mustangs and Cobras to race with 302ci carburated engines, a package that has not been available in a street Mustang for well over a decade. Now fuel injected pushrod and modular engines can be used. This allows Mustangs and Cobras in the T1 and T2 classes to race in AS at a national level. This move is hoped to both modernize the class and increase participation that has slipped in recent years.
The T1 and T2 Mustangs have some advantages over the previous AS rules package. The Touring cars have 17" wheels and 13" front brakes while the AS cars have only been allowed 16" wheels and 12" brakes. These advantages had been a reason why this change had been rejected in the past.
With that in mind the SCCA has imposed some significant weight penalties on the Touring cars to make sure they don't run away with the class. The penalties are significant enough that they could keep the new cars from being remotely competitive. SCCA reps respond to that fear by saying the rules are a work in progress and the chosen weight penalties are just a starting point.
