Mustang On Track has its own race team.  We take our name, Terra X RaceSport from the team name that our '95 Cobra R Raced under back in the day.

For what we are doing here, though, we can call ourselves Mustang On Track racing or MOT racing.

This past weekend we were scheduled to do the NASA-SE Road Atlanta race.  That would be a three hour enduro on Friday with Dwight Kelly and I sharing the driving.  Then American Iron races in the Cobra R for me on Saturday and Sunday along with our student driver teammate Alison Goodwin in her second round of NASA HPDE 1.

The week started with a manditory trip to the dyno.  NASA American Iron is a power to weigth ratio class that requires a dyno sheet to prove RWHP and Torque to pass tech for the season.  That turned out interesting as we went to PFM to use their dyno.  Its not a roller dyno and they said it would be stingy.

They were right.  The sheet said the 351 in the Cobra R scored 275 whp and 328 torque.  That was down from 304whp and 340 torque on a dyno dynamics last season.  I think curiosity demands we try a dyno jet to see what the difference really is.

Friday it rained and we decided that Dwight should run the car as I have no wet racing experience.  If the course dried, I would be ready to finish the race.  After staring 28th, Dwight quickly pushed the car to 5th and that is where the car stayed for most of the first half of the race.

Two of the new FR500S cars lead most of the early laps of the race.  They were using Hoosier rain tires and that gave them quite an advantage over the rest of the field.

Third and Fourth went back and forth between a BMW M3 and an Grand Am Mazda RX8 from Roar Racing.

Dwight settled into fifth spot.  The rest of the Mustangs and the FR500S cars were well behind us when halfway approached.

The rain had lessened and the track was starting to dry a bit.  As the pit stops began our Cobra R jumped to second place, but before we could pit for fuel at halfway, Dwight touched the painted line on the outside of the race track coming onto the front straight and he crashed.

As you can see the damage is not serious and we should be back on the track in April.  It did force us out of the race and to withdraw from the weekend races.  We did learn that the new Toyo R888 is a rain tire that we need to do more developement work with as Dwight was not very comfortable with them.

We had many strong reports on the tire, but we were certainly missing somewhere as the car was very skiddish in the wet.

Alison did get her DE1 sessions in even though she was dodging tornado warnings on and off all of Saturday.

It was her first time at Road Atlanta.  That can be intimidating for anyone, but for someone from Florida that is used to flat land, this course was going to be a real eye opener.

We spend some time together during the enduro going over the race track and its unique characteristics. Next on the schedule is HPDE 1 round 3 for Alison at Carolina Motorsports Park the first weekend of April.  The next race for the Cobra R will be the end of April at Roebling Road in Savannah, Ga.  That is a race I am really looking forward to.

We saw quite a bit of the new FR500S this past weekend I am hear we will get to mix with them some more in June at Barber Motorsports Park.

The seemed to be very competent race cars.  Many of the drivers had not raced at Road Atlanta before, but by the time they finished up on Sunday most were running pretty competitive lap times.

Those cars get their first Miller Cup series race on the first weekend of May at Road Atlanta.  I expect that it will be very interesting stuff.
